Five Ways of Attack
American Cougar Martial Arts students are expected to know the Five Ways of Attack. Advanced students must be able to describe and demonstrate all five during sparring.

Simple Direct Attack

Attack by Combination (ABC)

Attack by Drawing (ABD)

Hand Immobilization Attack/Foot Immobilization Attack (HIA/FIA)

Progressive Indirect Attack (PIA) or Broken Rhythm.
- Simple Direct Attack - a single kick, punch or strike thrown in isolation.
- Attack by Combination (ABC) - a sequence of strikes performed in rapid succession.
- Attack by Drawing (ABD) - causing the opponent to leave an opening e.g. a fake.
- Hand Immobilization Attack/Foot Immobilization Attack (HIA/FIA) - temporary immobilization of the hand or foot to provide time or access to strike.
- Progressive Indirect Attack (PIA) or Broken Rhythm - a change in speed or direction or timing.
